- To feed or not to feed the critically ill? by Dr. Charles Lew
This segment aims to discuss the fundamentals of nutrition support in critically ill patients. Areas of focus include nutrition assessment as well as energy and protein prescription at the different stages of critical illness. Nutrition issues that require special considerations such as COVID-19, acute respiratory distress syndrome, obesity and prone therapy will also be discussed.
- Nutrition in post critical care and recovery by Dr. Lim Yen Peng
Individuals who have survived critical care may experience post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) which can have a lasting impact on their health. Optimal provision of nutrition is fundamental during the sub-acute and long-term phases of recovery. Nutritional considerations and priorities in these patients are influenced by clinical diagnoses, co-morbidity, complications, and development of dysphagia, weight loss, frailty or sarcopenia after being critically ill. Nutrition therapy is central during patient rehabilitation for restoration of nutrition, lost muscle mass and function to improve quality of life. Patients should receive appropriate nutrition support to achieve adequate energy and protein consumption, as they transit through different feeding modes and experience physiological and functional challenges to food intake. Dietitians perform an essential role within the multidisciplinary team in the management of patients during their recovery phases. Dietitians provide individualized nutrition assessments, prioritize nutrition problems, plan and implement nutrition interventions to optimize the nutrition and hydration status of patients, while continually monitor their nutritional needs and progress, and ensure continuity of their nutritional care in an inter-disciplinary approach.
- Critical care rehabilitation: Paving the road to recovery by Dr. Geetha Kayambu
This talk will cover updates on critical care rehabilitation, muscle and nutrition aspects relevant to acute and subacute rehabilitation, and clinical considerations for improving current ICU practice for the preservation of muscle health, strength and early recovery to functionality.

About the speakers
L-R: Dr. Charles Lew, Dr. Lim Yen Peng, Dr. Geetha Kayambu
Charles Lew is a principal dietitian from Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH), Singapore. He specializes in critical care nutrition support. He completed a PhD at Flinders University in 2019, and has published a number of papers related to his thesis. His research interest includes nutritional assessment and nutrition support in the critically ill. He is the co-chair of the Allied Health Research Panel of NTFGH, and the treasurer of the Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (Singapore)(SingSPEN).
Lim Yen Peng is the head and a senior principal dietitian of the Nutrition and Dietetics Department at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), Singapore which the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) is part of. She plays a leadership role in the development of dietetic services, spanning across the continuum of care. As chair of the hospital Nutrition subcommittee, she leads an inter-professional team to effect system changes to improve nutrition care delivery in a collaborative approach. Lim also serves as a faculty member of the hospital Clinical Process Improvement Program. Nationally, she co-chairs the Dietitian panel at MOH to drive professional issues such as competency standards framework and is involved in the Ministry of Health Nursing Home Workgroup to recommend new models of nutrition care to improve resident outcomes.
Geetha Kayambu is a senior critical care physiotherapist at the National University Hospital (NUH), Singapore. She obtained her PhD at School of Medicine, University of Queensland in 2015 from Australia. She served as Director of Research, Department of Rehabilitation, NUH, 2015-2018 and is currently Research Lead for Physiotherapy, NUH and Strength and Physical Function Core, National University Singapore and member of Allied Health Research Oversight Committee, NUH. She is accredited Clinical Supervisor by the Allied Health Professional Council and Member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Geetha is a site principal investigator for ICU rehab research projects, oversees direction of potentially high-impact research in physiotherapy and motivates research collaborations both local and overseas. Her research interests include all aspects of rehabilitative management in intensive care, and early mobilisation of critical care patients and novel rehab strategies. Gita’s research into early physical rehabilitation in patients with sepsis syndromes was highlighted at the World Congress of Physical Therapy 2015, Singapore, for novelty updates in critical care research.
