NEW: FrieslandCampina Institute Publication on Child Growth and Development
Our new publication on child growth and development provides nutrition and health professionals science based and easy accessible information on this important topic.
Bone experts publish consensus report on protein intake and bone health
It is known that protein intake contributes to the maintenance and growth of body mass, including muscle mass. But is it also beneficial to our bones? Twelve experts in bone health published a consensus report summarising the most recent insights on protein intake and bone health. One of their main conclusions is that protein contributes to the maintenance of bone mass, provided that calcium intake is adequate.
New meta-analysis: Protein enhances muscle mass during resistance training programs
Protein contributes to growth and maintenance of muscle mass. The effect of protein supplementation when used in conjunction with resistance exercise training (RET) on enhancing muscle mass and strength in athletes has been widely investigated. However various studies have produced conflicting results. Morton et al (2018) performed a meta-analysis to further investigate the effects of protein supplementation during RET in healthy adults.
Maternal Nutrition and Digestive Issues in Paediatric Age Group
On 10th and 11th March 2018 the FrieslandCampina Institute organised a scientific meeting in collaboration with the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Malaysia (OGSM) in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). Various scientific experts shared scientific insights in the field of maternal nutrition and digestive issues in the paediatric age.
Measures and metrics of sustainable diets
Designing food patterns that are more sustainable and healthy is more challenging than it first appears. Especially when aspects such as availability, affordability and food culture are also taken into account. How do you determine a more sustainable and healthy diet? Drewnowski (2018) is using linear programming models in his research.
NEW Infographic & Video From Grass to Glass
Milk is the nutritious basis of many dairy products consumed throughout the world. Complete control over the nutritional, quality and safety aspects within the production chain is essential to ensure that all nutrients become available to consumers. This infographic and video explains the production chain of FrieslandCampina.
FrieslandCampina recognised for commitment to better nutrition
FrieslandCampina has moved up to a fourth place in the 2018 Access To Nutrition Index. With this it is the fastest riser compared to 2016. Every two years, the index tracks the contribution food and beverage manufacturers make to delivering better nutrition worldwide.
Effects of milk protein supplementation in older adults
Protein provides the essential amino acids needed for building and maintenance of body tissues. The effects of milk protein supplementation on body composition in older adults, when combined with resistance exercise, were examined in several recent randomized controlled trials. Meta-analysis of these studies shows that milk protein supplementation in combination with resistance training has a positive effect on fat-free mass in older adults.
Stronger effect of resistance training when combined with protein supplementation
Resistance exercise combined with protein supplementation is known to have a positive effect on building and maintenance of muscle mass in elderly. However, the effect of body weight on the augmentation of muscular and functional performance in response to protein supplementation in older people undergoing resistance type exercise remains unclear. Therefore, Liao and colleagues (2017) performed a meta-analysis to examine the effect of resistance exercise combined with protein supplementation on
‘Take advantage of the protein opportunity before sleeping’
Protein is popular among athletes, but there is also a great deal of attention being paid to extra protein in the diets of the elderly. What scientific knowledge backs this up, and how can you apply it in practice? The FrieslandCampina Institute spoke with Jorn Trommelen about his research at the Maastricht University, in the Netherlands, on the effects of protein on the muscles and the effects of consuming protein before sleeping.
