What is the Dairy Matrix Challenge?

  • The dairy matrix

Nutrition is more than the sum of single nutrients. Nutritional science increasingly highlights the importance of the matrix effect of whole foods as well as the need to look beyond the traditional way of investigating the relationship between single nutrients and various health outcomes.

Whole foods are regarded as a combination of various nutrients and components. Effects of a food pattern or food group on health indicators can be compared with the effects of single nutrients. For this, the term ‘matrix effect’ is used. It has been proposed that the dairy matrix has specific beneficial effects on health (Thorning et al., 2017) which merit further investigation.
