In the last few years, more and more information on sustainable diets has become available. However, defining sustainable diets is complex. Simply replacing animal products with plant-based foods does not always reduce the environmental impact if you take the nutritional value into account. Additionally, the costs of a sustainable diet are important. To give more insights into these considerations, the Optimeal® tool was developed.
By altering the consumption of certain food groups, Optimeal® shows you how much you should consume from all other food groups to maintain the same intake levels of nutrients. These changes in consumption are associated with differences in costs and environmental impact. In this manner, the Optimeal® tool shows how changes in the diet affect the environmental impact and the price of your groceries, while keeping the amount of nutrients the same.
