The FrieslandCampina Institute has developed the student assignment ‘A sustainable and healthy diet’ for students of nutrition and dietetics. By completing the assignment, future dietitians and nutritionists will learn what a sustainable and healthy diet entails and how this can be translated into information for clients. In 2018, in collaboration with the Dutch Association of Dietitians (NVD), we conducted a survey among dietitians to gain more insight into their knowledge, attitude and behavior towards sustainable nutrition. Almost all respondents (n=133) indicated that they think it is important for the dietary pattern to become more sustainable. In addition, the respondents expect sustainability to play a greater role in drawing up dietary advice in the future. It is therefore important for the new generation of dietitians and nutritionists to understand what a sustainable and healthy diet looks like. In addition, from conversations with teachers of various Nutrition & Dietetics courses in 2019 and 2020, the topic of sustainability emerged as a relevant theme for students.
Combined, these insights have resulted in the development of the student assignment ‘A sustainable and healthy diet’ for nutrition and dietetic students. By carrying out the assignment, students will learn what a sustainable and healthy diet entails and how this can be translated into information for clients.
The assignment can be performed in groups or individually. The time commitment is flexible and depends on the available time, group size and desired depth of the final product. You can download the assignment and adapt and use it according to your needs.
